A Bowl of Noodle Soup for the Soul
My first month in Taipei, and I'm loving it! Exploring sound, taste and smell of everything around. One thing that really got to me was, the hospitality of the locals. During the first three days here, my current roommate, Felicia and I haven't got a room to stay. We were staying at a hotel downtown and would require us around forty minutes to get to NCCU by bus.
One night, when we were surveying rooms closer to campus, a middle aged man who introduced us to some landlords fixed us to a bowl of beef noodle soup.
牛肉麵 niúròu miàn
Coming from Indonesia where our food is cooked with all kinds of herbs and spices, it's fair to say that the food aren't suitable for my tastebuds as most of it are flavourless. But this baby over here.. Felicia and I both devoured it at once. It's pretty hard to find halal beef noodles, but a friend of ours took us to a place in near Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall, 清真中國牛肉麵食館 Halal Chinese Beef Noodle Shop. Top notch!
Another must try in Taipei is a bubble tea shop called 陳三鼎 Chen San Ding, near Gongguan market. The drink is composed of milk and bobas only. The super soft tapioca bubbles is soaked in warm brown sugar and the milk is fresh and cold. It makes a great combination with the sweet potato balls while walking around the market at night. One taste and you're gonna come back for more and wouldn't want bubble tea from any other!
Shilin Night Market
If you're from Indonesia, you must know the popular franchise called Shihlin, Taiwan street snacks. Want to know the origins? Shihlin night market. Everyone, from locals to tourists, would queue for more than 15 minutes just to get a piece of it!
Although the weather can be uncertain (especially in these months), Taiwan is a really nice place to live in; the friendly people, the ease of getting around the city by public transport or even as a pedestrian, the great snacks at night markets. It's a nice place to heal the soul.
